Cognitive Flexibility and Creativity in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review, Anamaria-Mădălina SABOU, Cristina Anamaria COSTESCU

Abstract

There are studies in the literature that examine cognitive flexibility and creativity in ASD either separately or in parallel within the same samples. In the typically developing population, the evidence generally suggests a positive association between cognitive flexibility and creativity, although the reported results are not entirely consistent. Regarding the investigation of this relationship in the population with ASD, the evidence is limited. Therefore, we aim to investigate the evidence regarding flexibility and creativity in individuals with ASD, how they are assessed together in studies involving individuals with ASD, and indications of a possible relationship between the two. Seven studies were included in this systematic review. The findings suggest considerable heterogeneity both in the conceptualization of flexibility and creativity and in their assessment among individuals with ASD. Although some studies provide indications of a possible relationship between flexibility and certain forms of creativity, the studies included in this review provide limited direct evidence of this relationship. Future studies are needed to simultaneously and directly assess these two constructs and the relationship between them.
